One For The Books
2/19 was an eventful/stressful/crazy day. It started out normal. I honestly don't remember what we did. The kids took great naps and we went to Jill and Kate's house in the afternoon for a little play-date, Mommy hangout. (Oh this makes me laugh, now that I am reliving it in my mind.) Jill just got a beautiful, brand-new dining set from Costco which she was putting together while the kids were playing and we were chatting. We had just had a conversation about 90's Polly Pockets and what a chocking hazard they are when I looked over just in time to see Avery put a lock washer in her mouth. I freaked out. I did the hook trick to try and get it out of her mouth...nothing. Thinking that I pushed it down her throat, I turned her over and started banging on her back in hopes that it would fall out. We didn't see anything. I panicked. Avery was screaming, she had a bit of blood in the back of her mouth and I just knew she had swallowed it. I called 911. As Jill was talking to the dispatcher, Avery calmed down and thought I should have just called Chad. The firemen were there in the snap of a finger. Peyton was excited and I was embarrassed. We told them Avery was fine, apologized profusely-they were so kind-and then the ambulance arrived. They checked Avery's oxygen levels and went on their way. Peyton was so sweet when they paramedics were checking Avery. He kept saying "Protect Avery. Mommy protect her." Bless his heart.
While all of the excitement was raging, Chad, who was at work, went down and talked to some guys in the ED and they advised getting an x-ray just to make sure the washer wasn't lodged in Avery's throat. Graciously, Jill kept Peyton. (I am so grateful to have such a wonderful friend in Rochester. The Gardner's are like family! Peyton didn't even care that I was leaving him.)
Avers had her very first-and hopefully last-x-ray. And after all that-she didn't swallow the dang thing after all. I feel blessed that, for whatever reason, Avery didn't swallow the washer. She is healthy and I feel even more cautious about watching what she puts in her mouth.
