Remembering 9/11
I once asked my Grandma if she remembered where she was when JKF was shot. She said she was ironing. I have since wondered if my kids or even grandkids will one day ask me where I was when the United States was attacked by a terrorist group on September 11, 2011.
I was in 8th grade and I was in my room getting ready for school. I always listened to the radio when I was getting dressed so naturally I heard the news. I didn't quite believe that it was true and ran downstairs to ask my mom about it. She had the news on. The video of the plane crashing into the Twin Towers played over and over again. It was so surreal. That day at school we didn't do anything. We talked about what happened, watched the news and had a team meeting where we sang patriotic songs and had the opportunity to share our feelings about the event. I remember feeling a sense of patriotism. I have always been proud to be an American but even more so as our nation came together. I remember the many songs that were written and flags being flown in peoples' yards. The world just seemed to stop for a few days. I had a soccer game the net day and my grandma said I shouldn't go because the "crazies" were out. No one knew what to expect next.
I had the opportunity to visit Ground Zero just after I graduated high school. It really made everything real even though life had returned to normal. I hope we truly never forget what happened that day as life continues on. I hope we never forget the lives that were lost and the sacrifices that were made and have been made on our county's behalf since. I am proud to live in this great nation and I will never forget.
