Here's the story of a lovely lady...
Miss Avery Kay made her appearance on Friday, May 31 at 11:17pm. It was a dark and stormy night...literally. {We were in the middle of a tornado warning} Here's the story...
On Thursday night Chad was on call and I just prayed that Avery wouldn't come while he was working. My prayers were answered. We made it through the night and Friday morning Peyton and I hit the grocery store for a few last minute items. Then, since it was somewhat of a nice day, we went to the park. I had a doctor's appointment in the afternoon which Chad met me at to watch Peyton....I'm so glad he was there!
The nurse called me back, got me all checked in and asked if I would like to be checked. (Let's remember that I was never checked prior to going to the hospital with Peyton) I said, "Sure, why not. Might as well see if anything is going on." I was pretty doubtful given my history. In a few minutes the resident and midwife came in and proceeded to measure and then "check".
The resident checked and seemed a little puzzled. I immediately thought I wasn't dilated at all. She turned to the midwife and said, "I think she's at a 7. You come check." The midwife gave her a look like yeah, right. She checked and sure enough I was at a 6. I was walking around at 6cm having felt no regular contractions. They weren't sure what to do. They called the OB team on call and they said I could wait or be induced the next morning. I asked if I could talk it over with Chad who was out in the waiting room. We decided I would be induced Saturday morning, only while they were seeing their next appointment , I started having contractions every 3 minutes. Nothing painful. They still said I was ok to go home.
Chad was going to stay at work but I was nervous having never gone into labor before and thinking contractions every 3 minutes was a big deal. So we came home, made sure we had everything packed and ready to go and I called the sitter for Peyton and put her on call. Chad mowed the lawn-breaking the lawn mower in the process, Peyton ate dinner and the contractions continued to come every three minutes. Still nothing painful. After 2 1/2 hours of consistent contractions we called triage and they said, "Come now." We sent a sad Peyton off with our wonderful, gracious friends and headed to the hospital.
When we got there at 6:30pm I was still at a 6, 90% effaced. I held off on my epidural as I still wasn't having any pain. Around 9:30ish, I started feeling it so I asked for the drugs. The anesthesia team came and who was the resident on call? Our neighbor and fellow ward member Eric Cannon. Let me tell you, he gives a fantastic epidural!! I didn't feel a single contraction after the epidural was placed and my water broke shortly after.
I pushed for about a half hour. We had to do a lot of position changes and they even had to call in the on call consultant. Avery's heart rate kept dropping when I would push but she made it safe and sound. She arrived bright eyed and sunny side up weighing 6lbs 1oz. She has been an angel. We feel so blessed to have her with us. Seems like she has always been here and it's only been a week.
