Motivation Breakthrough

I am currently taking a class about how to teach and be successful teaching students with disabilities. In my class we have watched a couple videos by a man named Rick Lavoie. He is an amazing speaker. It is my opinion that you don't have to be associated or teaching a student with Learning Disabilities in order to apply some of his philosophies to your life. Here are a couple of things I learned yesterday...

"All human behvior is motivated"-there is a reason behind everything we do!!!

Paraphrasing: As babies, trainers put a chain around an elephants leg which is then attached to a stake in the ground. No matter how hard the baby elephant tugs it cannot get free. As adults, Elephants are stong enough to knock down bulidings but when a chain is placed around it's leg it which is attached to a stake in the ground, the adult elephant will walk in a circle believing that because of his experiences as a child he cannot become free. If only he would give the chain a tug he would be free. We need to "give the chain a tug"-not let our past experiences hold us back.

"Think of someone you really care about, whose opinion means the world to you. Would you rather that person be disappointed in or angry at you?"--"Disappointment is the most damaging of human emotions"

There were also some wonderful things about how rewards, punishment and competiton DO NOT motivate kids.

It's just a really great video...He's an awesome speaker...not boring at all! If you are interested check it out and maybe you will learn something to. You can find Motivation Breakthrough and other videos on YOUTUBE :)
